The Saffron Hawks U12s, U14s and U16s played the Herts Mavericks end-of-season tournament on Sunday. After dancing the night away at the Hawks awards night the previous evening, they somehow found the energy to compete hard under a scorching sun.
With England netball stars Sasha Corbin and Lindsay Keable looking on, and the ITV Anglia cameras rolling, the Hawks girls managed to scale the heights yet again.
In a round-robin format, the U12s and U16s were runners-up, and the U14s came third.
As they have done in many tournaments this season, the Hawks U15s were playing up as U16s, so their second place to a Young Mavs development team was a fantastic result. They have been the Hawks team of the season, and look forward to a potential national championship campaign next season.
The U12s came second, losing their first match against eventual victors Trafford, but winning the rest with ease. Their direct style and precision passing was praised by opponents and spectators alike. The U14s finished third behind Trafford and Mini Mavs, enjoying a number of fine wins throughout the day.
In an indication of netball’s increasing popularity, a couple of Hawks games were filmed by ITV Anglia and Hawks players and coaches were interviewed.
It is a game worth shouting about.
